Sent to the advisory committee for evaluation, John Dwyer’s request for a 1,050 ag district near Route 522 north of Massie’s Corner will come back to the planning commission for public hearing and recommendation, probably in July.
Preservation Tool In essence a voluntary zoning category, agricultural and forestal districts are allowed as local option to encourage the preservation of farm and forest land. Districts must include a minimum of 500 contiguous acres which may be owned by one or more persons. In addition to the 500 acre ‘‘core,’’ the district may include other properties within a mile radius.
After an application is made for an ag district, the request goes first to the advisory committee, comprised of supervisor representative Hubert Gilkey, VP1 extension agent Rap Owings, farmer and stockman Randall Updike, orchard is t Sam Snead, farmer James Falls, farmer and orchard ist Louis Moore, landowner and orchardist Jack Jenkins and landowner and civic activist Howard Hoschuh. The advisory committee is chaired by Gen. Hugh Exton.
Following review and evaluation, by the advisory committee generally including an on-site inspection, the application comes back to the planning commission for public hearing and recommendation before being forwarded to the supervisors for a second public hearing and action.
