Defense witness John Jenkins, who was in the car with Bright, testified that he left Hampton Inn at around 12:30, drove up Old Hollow and then went through Sperryville where he saw Martin walking down Route 522 toward his house. On his return to Sperryville, he said he’d walked to the fire scene with Martin and stayed until the fire trucks arrived.

Frank Coffey said Martin knocked onhis door and asked him to report the fire at 2 a.m. When he arrived at the scene with the fire trucks a few minutes later, Coffey, a volunteer firemen, said the barns were "pretty well on the ground" with .all four buildings “muchly burned the same." He added that he saw Martin later at the fire site helping to control the flames.
