The budget was cut because no one bothered, no one made the effort to persuade the supervisors that every penny was needed. No one bit the bullet and said yes, we know this will mean a tax increase but we must improve our schools.
The supervisors believe that their first priority is keeping Rappahannock’s tax rate the lowest in the state. We too want to see taxes at a minimum but if that means keeping the educational program at a minimum also, then taxes will have to go up. With an actual rate half or less of what is levied in neighboring counties, we can afford a little increase. We’re not suggesting tennis courts, swimming pools and electives to fit every student’s interest or whim but we do think that more than 20 some students should have the opportunity to take art, that more than one class section of eighth graders should be able to take history, that physical education should be offered past the tenth grade, that
