Frances Eldred testified that Fincham told her on November 3 that Martin was responsible for the Halloween fire but that she didn’t question him because she assumed the information was gossip or hearsay. After she read in the Rappahannock News that the defendant had been arrested and charged, Eldred said, she passed on Fincham’s assertion to * deputy Steve Crossman who asked her to talk again with the young man.
