Inconsistencies In Time Gertrude Foster said she left Hampton Inn with Martin at around 1 a.m., letting him off at the Comer Store approximately five minutes later. As she turned to go home, Foster said, she saw Martin walking towards Culpeper along the side of Route 522. In response to questions from Albrecht, she said she didn’t recall seeing Martin buy a drink from the soda machine, that after being let out he walked across the street from the Corner Store and started home.
Testifying that he was riding around with friends after leaving Hampton Inn on the night of the fire, Gary Lee Bright, 17, reported that he first saw Martin in front of the defendants house at around 1:10 a.m.
Returning through Sperryville after a drive up Jenkins Hollow, the group was flagged down by Martin in front of Coffey’s house after they’d spotted, the fire, according to Bright. With the defendant accompanying them, he said, they walked up to the fire scene and watched for about ten minutes before returning to the church parking lot.
