As the first prosecution witness, C. E. Johnson Jr., testified that family property destroyed inr the Halloween night fire included a 50-footby-50-foot horse barn “stuffed full of hay,” a grainery holding S00 hay bales and two antique wagons, a pump house, and a large 50-foot-by- 100-foot barn with a New Holland baler, antique hay loader, old sprayer, elevator, hay wagon and 5,000 hay bales. According to Johnson's estimates, total value of the loss was approximately $110,000. Reporting that he carried insurance on the property with Rappahannock Home Mutual, Johnson said he’d collected only $13,000.
