Gatewood said he d remembered seeing Martin in Sperryville on the night of the fire and so asked him if he’d burned Johnson’s barns. ’’Damn right I burned the m-down!” Gatewood testified the defendant replied.
In response to questioning from Baumgardner, Gatewood explained that he offered his testimony as part of a plea agreement in exchange for a reduction in charges lodged against him and recommendation on sentencing. He added that he’d received no promise of a reward for his testimony, that he hadn’t applied for the reward offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of foe arsonist. (At last report, donations to the reward fund from various individuals, groups, businesses and the county board of supervisors totalled approximately $10,000.)
