Seen Running C. D. Fincham, 16, said he’d been riding around with friends Halloween night and had been dropped off at the church in Sperryville to be picked up by his parents at midnight. When his parents didn’t arrive, Fincham said he walked to the Corner Store to buy a drink from the soda machine and saw Pete Martin going by Frank Coffey’s shop. “He looked like he was carrying a jug or a cad,” said Fincham, adding that he saw Martin climb over the fence.
On his return walk from the Corner Store, Fincham said he again saw Martin, this time running through Coffey’s backyard. “I don’t remember if he had anything in his hand.”
According to Fincham, he saw no signs of a fire on his trip to the drink machine but noticed the sky was illuminated on his way bade to the church lot. As he entered the lot, his parents arrived simultaneously with the sounding of the fire sirens, according to Fincham’s testimony.
