From an examination of powder left by the fire at opposite ends of the barn complex and testimony of eyewitnesses who said the barns were burning equally when first seen, O’Conner concluded that the fire started from “two sources, maybe more.” He added that he found no evidence of cigarette butts or matches to indicate possible accidental causes.

O’Conner said he questioned Martin who was seen in Sperryville late Halloween night and who also was first to report the fire. According to O’Conner, Martin said he’d been at Hampton Inn until 1:30 or 2 a.m., caught a ride with Gertrude “Frenchie” Foster to the Corner Store, bought a drink from the soda machine and then walked to his residence where he spotted flames at the top of the hill.
