In response to questions from commonwealth attorney Douglas Baumgardner. Johnson noted without his prior knowledge or approval, the barns have sometimes served as temporary shelter and sleeping quarters for transient migrant laborers and run-away boys.
According to Johnson, who has been farming steadily since 1934. all of the hay stored in and outside the barns was well-seasoned, between one and two years old. In addition, he said that none of the buildings were wired for electricity or contained any electrical appliances. The only power outlet in the vicinity, he testified, was a night light on a telephone pole located at least six feet from the closest structure.
