Reputation As Liar Asked by Albrecht from Albert Gatewood’s reputation for truth and veracity in the Sperryville community, Coffey replied ‘‘Not very good. I wouldn’t trust him.**
The defense attorney posed the same question to all the witnesses he called to the stand.
“I wouldn’t trust him,” said Gary Lee Bright, repeating Coffey’s answer.
“You can decide that by looking through the records of the court!” John Jenkins responded. “I don’t think he has a reputation for being truthful.”
Gatewood’s reputation for truth? “Not good," said Joey Pullen.
Taking the stand in his own behalf, Martin, who said he’s lived in Rappahannock since his release from the service in 1976, testified that Foster let him out in Sperryville at 1:45 by the clock in the Corner Store where he bought a drink from the soda machine. He said he walked to his house, went around back to the outhouse for 10-15 minutes, finished his drink and was coming back around the front of his home when he saw that Johnson’s barns were on fire and turned in the alarm at Coffey’s.
Martin swore that he'd never seen Albert Gatewood at Hampton Inn except outside since Gatewood was barred from the premises after being caught stealing two fifths of wine. He maintained he hadn't seen Gatewood since last August “1 wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him," Martin added.
