Rappahannock Neon Suff Writer Robert Clarence “Pete” Martin was found guilty in circuit court last Friday on five separate counts of arson involving the Halloween night barn burning at C. E. Johnson’s Sperryville farm laatywar.
After deliberating only an hour and a half, the jury brought back the guilty verdicts, sentencing Martin to serve two years on each count.
Although Martin took the stand in his own defense to claim innocence, it wasn’t enough to counter testimony from a prosecution witness who swore he saw the accused climbing over a backyard fence in the direction of the Johnson farm carrying a can or jug shortly before the fire broke out and then later spotted him returning at a run—minus the container—just as fire alarms sounded. In addition, defense witnesses placed Martin in Sperryville 45 minutes earlier than he said he was dropped off in town, creating doubts about his alibi.
