Under questioning from defense attorney Lee Albrecht, O’Conner acknowledged that he couldn’t name an exact cause of the fire, either natural or unnatural. He agreed that a single origin fire would have spread to include all four buildings eventually. The arson investigator explained that the burning of the barn complex was too complete to dig underneath the most heavily charred area for evidence of a liquid accellerant.
According to O'Conner, the highly flammable structures and their contents probably burned within 20 to 30 minutes. As his best estimate, he judged the fire started between 1:30 and 1:45 a.m.
Alleged Confession
Albert Gatewood testified while playing pool with Martin sometime in early December at Hampton Inn, he related the story of his recent arrest for grand larceny and breaking and entering. According to Gatewood, Martin responded, “ ‘That ain’t nothing!’ and then he got to bragging about what he’d done in the past.”
