Charlie Gasch was the father of Castleton’s Volunteer Fire Department. More than that, the Maryland native who moved to Rappahannock in the early 1950s was an authentic good Samaritan, always ready to extend a helping hand to those less fortunate.
Charlie died on November 5 in a Lanham, Maryland hospital after two months of expensive treatment for heart disorders and strok". In recognition of a life of service, his friends and neighbors in Castleton have declared Saturday, December 5, as “Charlie Gasch Appreciation Day.”
The county’s Fire and Rescue Association will,, sponsor a turkey shoot, lunch, dinner and auction in the fire hall Charlie helped build. Proceeds from the day’s activities will be presented to Geraldine Gasch in her husband’s memory.
The shooting match will start at 1 p.m. and continue until 4. This will be followed by a public supper and then an auction. If anyone has items they would like to contribute to the sale they may call Ray Cannon at 9374900, Jimmy Cannon at 9374700 or any member of the Castleton Fire Department. The public is cordially invited to attend the day’s events.
Shooting match prizes include ham, turkeys and others and only 12 gauge guns may be used.
