After a long closed meeting that ended at 1:40 a.m., the board voted to (1) hire Reid Payne as bus driver and mechanic and Roy Lee Knighting as bus driver, (2) accept resignations from a cafeteria worker and bus driver-mechanic, and (3) solicit two additional bids for roof work at the elementary school.
No additional action was taken on the gas access policy, however.
On the subject of roof repairs, Estabrook reported earlier in the meeting that the elementary school contains “on occasion to have a river flowing through the gym and at times the cafeteria and even the classrooms.”
He told the board members that representatives from a roofing company in Winchester had inspected the roof that day and would submit a report. "They seemed to feel it could be permanently fixed,” Lysik said, adding that he expected "a very, very high cost.”
At the start of last Tuesday’s meeting, David Johnson of Clement Insurance Company reviewed types of school insurance and agreed to make recommendations on expanding the board’s coverage, particularly in the area of liability, after he received complete information on the extent of coverage the board has now.
Also related to insurance, new member Randall Updike suggested the board look into providing insurance coverage that would allow use of school buses by groups not related to the school, such as Girl Scouts and 4-H clubs.
