Extensive Research
The stories collected by the Johnsons were gathered after months and years of listening and looking. Pete Estes, another local history buff, looked over the Johnsons' source material for their book.
“He couldn’t believe all the research we did on this,” Elisabeth said. “For instance, I read every word of the court records from 1833 to 1980!”
Despite this monumental effort, a few other facts eluded the historical detectives besides the complete and authoritative listing of each and every oneroom school house. Elisabeth noted out the derivation of most of the county’s place names but try as she might, she couldn't pin down Rediviva.
But it wasn’t the history of place names that presented the Johnsons with their biggest stumbling block; that honor belonged to the post offices. "Honest-to-God good information on the post offices was the hardest to find. We never did get it so we were satisfied." Ned acknowledged.
“The post office was not very cooperative,” added Elisabeth, pursing her lips in a look of disapproval typical of an author dealing with a recalcitrant source.
