To get from 500 to 450 pages, they “scratched out and scratched out and scratched out — and cried a i lot," according to the < authors. They plan to donate all copies of their source materials to the Historical Society but the Johnsons intend to keep their original manuscript because so much was cut from the final draft that Went to the printers.
"I composed and Ned disposed,” added Elisabeth, the half of the partnership responsible for most of the actual writing of the book.
“We realize that since I’m the elder and the native of the county, it's going to be called Ned Johnson’s book but it’s really Momma Johnson's,” Ned emphasized.
Copies of “Rappahannock County, Fact, Fiction, Foolishness and the Fairfax Story” are expected to arrive from the publisher’s by midDecember and will be available through the Rappahannock Historical Society which is handling sales for the Johnsons. The Society is now taking orders for the book at SI 5.95 plus tax with the price to go up to $19.95 after November 20.
Elisabeth and Ned Johnson had a wonderful time in their first foray into the literary world but they don’t plan another trip. “It was fun but I’ll never do it again,” Ned confessed, shaking his head and grinning. “Why, I had to read all the* school board minutes from every last meeting!”
