By 1956, the Castleton community has grown to where 500 people were served on its rural mail route. The folks who lived in those settlements on the fringe of areas covered by the county’s other volunteer fire departments felt they needed protection of their own. Washington, Amissville and Sperryville were just too far away for comfort when a chimney fire set the roof ablaze or a burning field threatened a barn and the gear’s hay crop. ^
That’s when Charlie Gasch stepped in. An electrician who moved to the county in 1952, buying the old Menefee farm, he managed Del Rio Electric Company in Lanham and a branch office of the business in Rappahannock.
