Although all the council members and the mayor wanted to have the decorations, the depleted town budget made some discussion necessary.
Town treasurer Brad Fisher was not present at the meeting. His message to Miller concerning the budget was that the town was “holding its own.” But all council members were aware that drilling of two new wells, laying pipe to hook one well to the system, purchase of land for the well site and right-of-ways have greatly lowered the town’s reserves. Updating of the existing water pipe will continue to drain town funds.
“I hate to be a Scrooge, Dorothy,” said Miller after the subject of decorations was brought up. “But I honestly don't know where the money will come from.”
C. E. Giles suggested that the town look into less expensive decorations, perhaps from a different source. “We ,need to watch every penny,” he said. “I never really noticed the .decorations,” Taylor Updike said. In the end they all supported the motion, causing Miller's comment about Santa Claus. “But I don’t know how we’ll pay for them," he added.
