A mobile health unit, sponsored by the Rappahannock chapter of the American Cancer Society, will be in the county on April 14 and 15. offering a series of blood testing services.
The tests conducted at the unit, a part of Howard University's Center for Sickle Cell Disease, will check for sickle cell trait, hemoglobin C trait, thalassemia trait and nutritional anemia. Blood pressure testing will also be available.
Blood test results from the finger prick are ready in 20 to 30 minutes. The unit provides counseling on the various types of blood disorders as part of its service.
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited disease in which there is a defect in the hemoglobin (coloring matter of the red corpuscles of the blood).
