According to the superintendent, all those who work with the gifted and talented program—administrators, teachers and the parent advisory board —-are Uncomfortable with the label. “Kids are not overly eager to be seen as different so we’re looking at an alternative way of referring to the program to give a better understanding of the intent. It's not to label but to provide an opportunity for growth," Estabrook explained.
As part of the effort to create better understanding, the superintendent sees a place for counseling for both students and parents. “We need to reach out to the parents and to the students to help them deal with the notion of being gifted and talented,” he said, Estabrook noted that in Wythe County, where he served before coming to Rappahannock, he '‘’found youngsters "very bothered...almost ashamed of being labeled ‘gifted and talented’. At times, there’s real pain in both quarters—parents and children—involved in dealing with a child’s exceptional ability...Parents need to learn what kind of things they can do to carry on the continuity of the program from classroom to home.”
Another area Estabrook would like to see addressed at some {joint in the future is expansion to a summer program in cooperation with a local community college.
