workers provide or arrange for services to the endangered child and to his or her family and the alleged abuser or neglecter.
The Child Protective Services program also provides services to families and children where no complaint has been made but where a child may be at risk. Protective and preventive services to children are available to all families regardless of income.
Most of the 36.817 cases investigated by Child Protective Service workers in 1980-81 involved neglect of the child (52 percent). The remaining situations included emotional abuse or neglect (14.9 percent), physical abuse (13.6 percent), and sexual abuse (4.7 percent). Other types of abuse or neglect accounted for 14.6 percent of the founded cases.
Some 38 Virginia children died as the direct result of abuse or neglect from July 1, 1980 through June 30, 1981, accounting for 0.2 percent of the abuse-neglect reports.
The 36,817 child abuseneglect complaints were reported by various sources. Professionals mandated by law to report suspected child abuse or neglect accounted for 31.9 percent of all reports. These professionals include doctors, law enforcement officers, social workers, teachers, and others whose work brings them in contact with children. The remaining 68.1 percent of suspected child abuse-neglect situations were reported by friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. Of the mandated reporters, public school personnel were the largest source of reports. Of the nonmandated reporters, friends and neighbors were the largest source.
