After the Armistice celebration, the ex-soldier returned to Rappahannock where he built his family’s white frame home-place up on Red Oak. He farmed on the mountain and down the river and with his wife and two children, managed in those old days to be “pretty self-supportin’. With the garden and stock—a few hogs and chickens—we raised almost everything we needed. Now a little slice of bacon costs you $2 a pound,” he added, shaking his head in dismay.
Other old timers may lament the changes that have come to the county but from his perspective of 87 years, Howard Jones doesn't see a great difference—with the exception of a few cars and the higher cost of living—between the present and the past.
