Lack of experience and missing bench strength told the tale last week as the Lady Panthers dropped two games, their final contests before district competition begins next Tuesday.
Last Tuesday night, the Panthers traveled over the mountain to Luray where they were defeated. 52-32. They stayed fairly close to their traditional rivals until the final quarter, according to coach Teresa McLawhorn, but the run-and-gun Bulldogs proved to be too much lor the girls from RCHS.
Rappahannock had few problems controlling the ball, tagged with just nine turnovers to Luray's seven. Karen Jordan was high scorer for the Panthers followed bv Kim Settle with ten. Settle had three assists, McLawhorn reported, all to Jordan. Natalie Butler, Cindv Bywaters and Ann Tupper each added two points to the tally.
On Thursday. September 2. the Panthers were overwhelmed by Page. 25-47. Again Jordan was high for RCHS with 19 points and 17 rebounds.
The bright spot of the night was the junior varsity’s victory over their Panther counterparts in Page. RCHS came on strong from the opening tip, building up a 10-2 lead by half-time. Page started to come back but Rappahannock's Marlena Jenkins went to the foul line with about a minute left in the game and the score tied. She sunk one of her two free throws to ice the victory for the junior Panthers, 15-14.
Mary Fletcher was high jayvee scorer with six points followed by Tammy Butler and Rosalind Cook with four apiece. Fletcher pulled in 13 rebounds and Cook six to give the Panthers domination of the boards.
Coach McLawhorn is understandably disappointed in her team’s 0-3 start on the 1982-83 season but she expects the picture to get brighter. “We have a very young varsity team. Experience has been the major factor in our three losses." She noted that the defeats have all come at the hands of non-district opponents. “We haven’t faced a district opponent yet. We open in Bull Run at home against Stonewall Jackson Tuesday night." McLawhorn said. "Stonewall has a lot of >trength inside and they have almost all of their players returning from last year. Tuesday's game will pit four seniors and four juniors (for Stonewall) against Rappahannock’s two freshmen and three juniors.” Despite the losses, McLawhorn has been pleased with the individual play of
