Judge John Alexander said that the stories of the four simply did not fit the facts as related by the officers. After hearing their sentences, all four of the men expressed a desire to appeal the judgement.
Tried separately was Robert Garence Martin, who pled guilty to charges of petty larceny stemming from the same June 24th incident. After entering the guilty plea. Martin asked to take the stand to clarify some of the questions surrounding the case.
