Quick action by a beer truck driver foiled a beer heist at the Sperryville Comer Store and resulted in sentencing of five Sperryville men in District Court Tuesday. A sentence of thirty days in jail, suspended, and $100.00 and costs was given to Robert C. Martin, Kenneth Foster, Roger Cave, John R. Jenkins and David Nichols.
Doug Shelton, distributor for Blue Ribbon beer, testified that he was loading wine at the Sperryville Comer Store on June 24 when he saw feet on the other side of his truck from underneath and ran out the back of the store to check it. He found that the door had been lowered and cases removed from the truck. The store’s owner, “Bud” Werner called the sheriffs office and ran out to assist Shelton.
