Appointments to that quasi-judicial body are made by the Circuit Court Judge. Bruce noted that Judge Shore Robertson, in acting on past vacancies, has accepted nominations to the BZA from the Supervisors and then scheduled a time at the court house to hear comment from the public before acting.
At Wood’s suggestion, the supervisors agreed to delay making a recommendation on the BZA vacancy until their October meeting.
Upon advice from commonwealth's attorney Douglas Baumgardner, the supervisors agreed to rescind a vote taken last year to establish a building inspection department. The county's legal advisor explained that the board originally advertised its intention to create its own building inspection department but then contracted with neighboring Fauquier County to provide the service. Therefore. Baumgardner said, the proposal must be readvertised along with the fee schedule charged by Fauquier personnel. In addition, the supervisors must also designate Fauquier’s Building Code Appeals Board as the Building Code Appeals Board for Rappahannock, he noted. Bruce read a letter from the chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, asking Rappahannock to send a representative to a state forum which will address the establishment of local drunk driving task forces. John Herrity noted in his letter that a quarter of a million people have been killed by drunk drivers in the last decade and that over 50 percent of all accidents are related to alcohol.
