Miller's column, “Records of Former Days in Rappahannock" had some quotes from the old Blue Ridge Guide of 1913. These were some of the ads that appeared in the October 23, 1913 edition of the Guide. "P.S. Green, professional barber. I have recently opened a First Class Barber Shop in the town of Washington, and am prepared to do all kinds of first-class work pertaining to barbering. Satisfaction guaranteed. Give me a call at my shop one door north of post office. P.S. Green.
"For Rent. We offer our store building for rent beginning January 1. 1914. Interested parties are respectfully invited to call and inspect. H.L. Menefee, Sperryville.”
It was noted that Mr. and Mrs. William A. Biintin. who had been occupying an apartment in the home of Miss Lottie Burton, had recently purchased the property of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wagner, on Main Street between the properties of Miss Margaret Compton and Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Jenkins.
There was an editorial written in opposition to President Truman's remarks about the Marines. He had called them the “Navy's Police Force" to the dismay of marines, ex-marines and marine admirers. The editor also took issue with a remark by the president, "designating the maternal parentage of a newspaper columnist to the kennels." The editor was also offended by Truman's remark that “there were too many Byrds in the Senate."
