September 1, 1986, marks a new era of educational technology in Virginia. On that date, the graduate engineering school at the University of Virginia will begin transmitting live classes via satellite to Universities and businesses throughout the state of Virginia. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will begin transmitting their courses September 24.
The State’s Department of Information Technology has planned and coordinated a network of television receive only (TVRO) satellite antenna systems which spans Virginia. Although they were set up specifically to receive graduate engineering classes, the systems can also “see” satellites serving the continental United States as well as some foreign satellites.
“Beginning this fall the courses will be uplinked directly from UVa and Virginia Tech to the Galaxy II Satellite for reception at more than 20 locations within and outside of Virginia,” said Constance Ober of
