Lake closed
to restock
G. Richard Thompson Lake, located on the Virginia Game Commission’s Wildlife Management Area on Rt. 688 between Markham and Paris in Fauquier County, will be closed to all public use through September 9.
The Game Commission announced that the closing will allow the commission’s biologists to restock the lake’s fish population. Biologist Ed Steinkoenig said the lake, stocked in the past with bluegill and largemouth bass, has never maintained a balanced population. He explained that the restocking effort will supply the lake with a balanced sport fishery which will maintain its own population through natural reproduction.
Plans call for restocking the lake with smallmouth bass, bluegills and golden shiners. Catfish will be added at a later date to diversify the fishery. Mr. Steinkoenig said that because Thompson is a cool mountain lake the new species should have no trouble adapting and proliferating in the habitat.
