“Why I Like Living Near Shenandoah National Park” was an essay contest topic given to some sixth and seventh grade students in Rappahannock County, Green County, and Warren County. Two Rappahannock County Elementary School students placed first and fifth in the contest.
Jan Lynn Hitt, first place winner, received the assignment from her seventh grade science teacher, Lynne Baines and her English teacher Eleanor Katz.
“I didn’t know anything about the contest. Mrs. Katz just told us to write a paper using that title. I wrote about my feelings about the park, how to take care of the park, the wildlife, and the scenery,” Jan said. “I got an A and Mrs. Katz said it was an excellent paper. On the last day of school I found that I was one of the five winners in the contest.”
Jan and her family were asked to attend the awards ceremony at Skyland. Jan’s mother, Mrs. Linda Dodson, of Sperryville, recalled the night’s events. “I knew that Jan Lynn had won something but we didn’t know what place until all of the winners read their essays. They started with fifth place and we soon realized that she was the only one left to read. We knew then that she had received first place.”
She added, “Winning the award gave Jan Lynn a lot of self confidence and has motivated her to write more.”
Jan says she enjoys going to the park, especially in the spring, so expressing her feelings about the park was easy for her to do.
