Ricky Doyle Gray, 28, of First Street, Luray, was shot and killed late Friday afternoon while deer hunting off Rt. 620, about three miles south of Sperryville.
According to 1st Sgt. G. H. Gregory of the Virginia State Police, “It appears that the person who fired the shot thought he was shooting at a deer. The high-powered rifle bullet struck Mr. Doyle in the right side and passed completely through his body. He was transported to the Fauquier Hospital by the Castleton Volunteer Rescue Squad, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Sgt. Gregory said that the victim and the person who fired the shot, whose name is being withheld pending completion of the investigation, were hunting in different parties, separated by about 100 yards of woods on a remote hillside.
