Thousands of labelled glassine bags containing an attractant and a tetracycline-treated sponge have been dropped from airplanes over wooded areas with dense raccoon populations in the two test zones. Attracted to the bait, the raccoons chew the sponge and consume the biomarker. By examining raccoon teeth taken from the test zones for traces of tetracycline, the researchers are analyzing the effectiveness of a system which may one day bring the rabies vaccine to the wild.
