The true spirit

If ever there was an example of the true spirit of the Christmas season, it has been provided during the past week by the residents of the Town of Washington and their neighbors throughout Rappahannock County.

Following a fire which seriously damaged their shop and home, Fran and Charlie Eldred and their family have been deluged with offers of assistance.

Early Saturday morning, a group was up on the roof of the shop erecting a temporary plywood and plastic cover to shield the building from further damage. Others have stopped by throughout the week to spend a few hours helping to sort through and shovel out the heaps of plaster and wood which litter the building.

Still other neighbors have brought food and offered clothing and bedding, and accommodations were provided by one of the town’s inns.

In a time when selfishness is often portrayed as the dominant influence, when stories abound of neighbors who don’t even know each other’s names,'when people refiise to help in emergencies because they’re afraid of being sued — isn’t it comforting to know that some of the old-fashioned sense of community and spirit of the season still exists?

Doesn’t it feel good to be old-fashioned?
