I have carried a Panthers sticker on my pickup for years to boost our Rappahannock teams but the time has arrived to ask seriously some hard questions: (1) For what purpose do the people of this county believe public schools were established in this state, over a century ago, in the first place? (2) Just what purpose do the people of this county want their public schools to serve? (3) What priorities do the people of this county want their School Board to establish in the training of these young people anyway?

Your paper’s account of the proceedings and verbal violence after I left the hearing on Dec. 18 saddens me and makes me question whether these children will ever get what they are legally, morally, ethically and by natural right entitled to receive - an education inculcating in them knowledge and virtue — no matter how much is spent and on what.

But 1987 presents a new page, as yet unmarked by good or evil; let us never abandon hope. In a moral and civic sense, these children belong to us all and should be cherished by us all.
