do not, have my complete indifference, as a misplaced priority in this county at this time. In fact, one could easily make the case that these latter elements may be actually destructive of academic instruction, as they have been at the University of Maryland and many other “institutions of learning” recently.
The superintendent’s personal and social conversations at the Hampton Inn, with or without table napkins, were and are unknown to me. But I repeat that, the first time Mr. Estabrook shared with the School Board his new and enlarged basketball gymnasium and auditorium-theater expansion project, with interlocking and inter-dependent components, I was there on the board. We listened to it as a new capital outlay plan proposed by the superintendent and listened with mixed reactions. At any rate, why would anyone who favors the new gymnasium-auditorium-theater plan try now to take away from the man the credit for first proposing it to his School Board? • The thrust of my comments at the hearing, however, was to lament the sorry spectacle in recent weeks of the public comments on the lack of communications between the supervisors and the School Board members whom the supervisors now appoint in the first place.
