The Health Department does not recommend taking salt tablets or fluids with high concentrations of salt in the aftermath of heat cramps. There are no long-term problems associated with these cramps, and with rest, the body will adjust its own salt balance.

Heat stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. The sweating system is overloaded and literally shuts down, and body temperature soars to 105 degrees or higher, a level that destroys tissue. The skin is flushed, dry and extremely hot. The victim is dazed and confused and will eventually lose consciousness. Pulse weakens and blood pressure falls. Without treatment, death follows quickly.

Those suffering from heat stroke are usually too bewildered to recognize the symptoms in themselves so it’s up to others to take action. If you see these signs in someone, get the person to lie down out of the sun. Cool the victim’s body with ice packs, or cool, wet towels or, as a last resort, cold liquid poured on the skin’s surface. And call an ambulance.

“We haven’t seen any heat stroke cases at the clinic,” Dr. Martin reported. Following the dictates of “good common sense” will ensure this situation continues.
