High school fees for 1988-89 will rise by much smaller increments, essentially reflecting the increased cost of such items as workbooks, gym uniforms, and school insurance. The cost of lunches at both schools will remain the same.
Board organized
At its July meeting, the first of the new fiscal year, the School Board elected officers, returning incumbent Beverly Massie as chairman and to the post of Rappahannock’s representative on the Piedmont Vocational Center’s board. Bill Oliver was elected vice-chairman, Robert Chappell clerk, and Dr. Gangel deputy clerk and ETV representative. The date and time of board meetings will remain the same (second Tuesday of the month at 7:30; 8 p.m. during June, July, August, and September) but the location will shift between the elementary school and the high school, dependent upon athletic schedules.
Objectives for the new year
In a school administrator’s version of New Year’s resolutions, Dr. Gangel outlined his objectives for 1988-89. “Some objectives we want to put in front of the staff and the students continually,” he noted, adding that this approach coupled with follow-up can “change behavior on a daily basis.”.
At the top of the list is “recognize and reward achievement. We don’t want to send notes home to parents just when students do something wrong. We want notes to go home when they do something right!” the superintendent said, adding that everyone — students and staff alike — should get “pats on the back” and positive encouragement for achievement.
Next comes “improve climate and cooperation,” not just between the administration and the teachers, but between students and teachers, students and administrators, parents and administrators, parents and the School Board — “everybody,” Dr. Gangel said.
Third is strive for cleanliness. “I’m going to be a bear as far as cleanliness is concerned,” said the superintendent, adding that he will hold the principals accountable for the conditions at their schools and in turn, the principals can hold the teachers accountable and the teachers, the students.
