review, Superintendent Gangel noted that law prohibits the blanket screening of all current employees for the AIDS virus. New employees could be tested, he said, but questioned whether this would have any benefit since infection could occur the day after testing. Dr. Gangel said it’s unlikely the employee policy will ever be applied since by the time noticeable symptoms appear, the AIDS sufferer is usually too ill to work and, with an impaired immune system, would not choose to be exposed to the germs and viruses rampant in a school environment.
The twin policies adopted last week aren’t the only steps being taken by the Rappahannock schools in response to the AIDS virus. All teachers will see educational films on the history of the disease, methods of transmission, how it progresses, and the outlook for treatment and prevention. In addition, AIDS education for students will be part of the family life curriculum to be developed this year
