Besides increasing the threat of forest fire, the drought is further stressing trees already imperiled by gypsy moths. Normally, a healthy tree can withstand at least one defoliation, Ranger Hakel said, but coupled with the drought, the mortality rate among first-time defoliated trees will be 10 to 20 percent.
And this fall and winter, the dual impact of drought and moth will begin to be felt by the park’s wildlife, particularly the deer and bear who depend on acorns for a large portion of their diet, Ranger Hakel said.
