squarely was that while the Town of Washington has Waxed and waned over the years in its support and efforts to produce a Fourth of July celebration, William Carrigan has steadfastly provided a mechanism for this celebration for twenty-six years prior to this year and continued the tradition this year.
This point of fact appears to also be lost in the barnyard shuffle for “control.” I was sorry to see that happen. I worked with Mr. Carrigan for many years to help him and the Town have a glorious Fourth. While both of us are known to be somewhat contentious and obstreperous, even when we disagreed, we always managed to find a compromise that kept in the forefront the great birthday we were celebrating. I did not hear much about compromise or a birthday celebration in the conversations of this year’s organizers. I wish I had heard more about compromise and less about control. To do so would have made me think that the present organizers are truly different from the less flexible old timers and natives of the County.
It is sometimes said that with age comes wisdom. I never knew Mr. Carrigan as a young man, but I have learned from his .wisdom for the past 14 years. Some of the lessons he has taught me were directly related to the Fourth of July celebrations of those 14 years. Some of the lessons he has taught me, I could not have lived without.
While the baton of “control” over the yearly celebration may be passing, the present organizers would do well to take the time to learn from the past and the wisdom of all those who have learned to compromise for the benefit of the greater good.
