Mr. Dennis said that the potential corridors on the eastern route around Washington, through Maryland, would also be reduced to three instead of two possibilities. VDOT and MDOT have said that after this first-round selection the potential corridors will be subjected to detailed study involving traffic analysis based on computer-model projections.
Commissioner Pethtel responded to the concern voiced by opponents of the bypass here that the state could build it without federal funds.
“Sure,” he said. “It would be easier with federal funds. But there’s little doubt in my mind that we could build it with state and regional funds and with tolls. I don’t have any doubt that could be done. ”
