Mr. Pethtel said that the bypass would “serve a variety of purposes, % one of which is to relieve the [existing] beltway as much as possible.”
According to PEC’s Dennis, preliminary studies show that a bypass will reduce traffic on the beltway by only three percent.
Commissioner Pethtel said that there is also a “purpose on both sides, Maryland and Virginia, to relive congestion on local transportation networks. We have seen that segments of new roadway can have a dramatic effect.
“There’s a lot of congestion in some places, and there are a lot of other places that are not served by a road at all,” Mr. Pethtel said. Both problems need correction, and the bypass could accomplish that goal, he believes.
Some local opponents have said that Fauquier County should not solve the transportation problems in Northern Virginia.
“I don’t think it’s just Northern Virginia’s problem,” Mr. Pethtel responded. “Transportation is an issue of vital importance state-wide.”
