In 1759, the Town of Fairfax (now Culpeper), took Lord Fairfax’s name.

George Washington, who was distantly related to the Fairfax family, received his first appointment as Lord Fairfax’s surveyor. The young Washington’s travels included what is now Rappahannock County (at the time a part of the vast area which was then Culpeper County), where he surveyed the Town of Washington in 1749.
