District has first Lyme case
A 21 -month-old Culpeper County boy is the health district's first victim of tickborne Lyme disease, district health director Dr. John Einarson announced last week. The youngster apparently contracted the illness while his family was vacationing in southeastern Virginia. Dr. Joanne Owens, the health director for that area, said that there had been no reports of Lyme disease yet this year but that cases had been verified last year. According to Dr. Einarson, the boy is under a physician's care and is responding well to treatment with antibiotics. Early detection and aggressive treatment of Lyme disease with antibiotics has proven to be the best defense against the later, more serious manifestations of the illness, the health chief added.
