No international topic is more in the news today than the subject of this article. Nor should there be.

Nothing currently has greater implications for world peace and for Jthe meaning of this week’s national holiday: the freedom and dignity and rights — this last matched with duties — of the individual; the concept of government to serve the people, not to be served by them. The disappearance of the Communist threat would not result in the perfect world, any more that Dr. Salk’s vaccine rid the United States of health problems. But it certainly would help!

Two recent publications illustrate the popular answer to this question. Zbigniew7 Brzezinski’s The Grand. Failure: The Birth and Death of Communism in the Twentieth Century is one. Another, the June 19 issue of U. S. News & World Report, on its cover bears in very large type the three words, "Collapse of Communism.”

So vital is this issue that every American should review the evidence on both sides. Everyone can speculate, but not even Gorbachev or Deng Xiaoping can give us the answer. A good place to start is with terms: What exactly is Communism?

Members of the Soviet Party, indeed all ruling Communists in the world, often refer to themselves as Marxists-Leninists. It is a synonym for, a clearer way of saying, Communist, and we must understand that they take Communism and their Parties, their beliefs and missions, seriously.
