More arguments come from a book published in 1984 and written by an ex-KGB (Soviet intelligence) officer, now an American citizen. Anatoly Golitsyn’s New Lies for Old tells a story so difficult to believe that few do, especially in this country where no secret can be kept.
Golitsyn’s thesis is simple: as one involved in the work from the beginning, he says — providing supporting evidence — that between 1957 and 1960, the world’s Communist parties developed and agreed to a long range plan to defeat the Free World. Closely held within the top leaderships, it is based on a massive disinformation campaign: i. e., over many years the Communists-have led the Free World’s leaders and peoples to accept as true that which was not, and to disbelieve that which was! Many of the “cracks" in the Communist nomolith are “arranged” then: the Sino-Soviet split; the rise of democratic influence in Czechoslovakia and Poland; the gradual “softening” of the Soviet regime; and more. All of these, Golitsyn claims, are false, unreal, designed to mislead and weaken Communism’s enemies.
But, he added, ". . . the ‘liberalization’ would be calculated and deceptive in that it would be directed from above. . . carried out by the party through its cells and individual members.”
All this sounded impossibly imaginative when written — except that in Poland. Solidarity is joining the Government; U.S. defense spending is shrinking; our relations with allies are increasingly troubled; Sakharov is in the Soviet parliament; Gorbachev suggested during his recent visit to West Germany that the Berlin Wall might be demolished.
It is not a bad lesson to keep in mind during this Independence Day week, and to remember that what some Chinese did in Tiananmen ,j Square a few weeks ago was not* done because they are Chinese; it was because they are Communists.
Has the Communist threat disappeared? Maybe, maybe not.
