“that people realize that this puts the fire department in a difficult position, since the money that they anticipated to run the department for the next year didn’t come through.”
Perhaps, he suggested, people who didn’t attend the celebration because of the weather, or who left early, might donate part of the money they intended to spend there to the department anyway. “There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into this. They give their time freely, but the reward they get is the oney they put in the bank to help serve the community. When they don’t get that — it’s discouraging.”
“It was a disappointment,” Chief Roach agreed, “for us and for a lot of other people.”
Tentative plans have been discussed for another event later this summer to mark the 240th birthday of the Town of Washington, and to help the fire department recoup some of the investment lost Tuesday. Saturday, Aug. 19 has been set as a possible date, and the fire department is investigating the possibility of setting up a late afternoon and evening program.
