Objections

Continued from page 1

Mr. Heddleston said another objection he had was that “youth watch too much TV.” The high school English teacher said he had given one student athlete a ride home one day, and the ballplayer’s major concern seemed to be that he arrive home in time to watch a certain movie on television. “If I’m not mistaken that student failed this year,” he said. “If we pay more for something, we’re going to watch more.”

He said he was also concerned about the Playboy channel and MTV (the music video channel). He said that when he and Mr. Von Fange were working to get X-rated videos out of Sperryville’s video rental store, they learned that children as young as six were watching X-rated movies. “I’ve seen X-rated movies,” he said. “If we spend too much time watching, it’s going to affect any one of us. MTV is promoting suicide, devil worship and unbridled sex. Our constitution does not grant unbridled freedom.

“We have a new landfill to take care of our trash. We don’t want a lot of trash coming in to pollute our children’s minds and adults’ minds too,” Mr. Heddleston said.

“This ordinance does not require you to ever put in a franchise,” Mr. Luke said. “Now you have no control at all. If you want to do that, you’d better pass an ordinance like this. Now you have the creeping in of cable companies from adjoining counties.”

“I have to agree with Peter,” Board Chairman Hubert Gilkev said. “We need something in writing when these people come in and apply for one.”

“I agree we need an ordinance,” said Stonewall-Hawthom representative Robert Anderwson. “I have the same fears Tom and Jon do. These things are out there, but now people have to buy a satellite dish to receive them.”

The Board of Supervisors voted to table the ordinance until the August meeting.

The hearing on the power line was for information only, Mr. McCarthy noted. Assistant Division Manager Harry Saufley and Area Engineering Supervisor Pete Jackson attended to answer questions.

Mr. Saufley said that Potomac Edison was replacing all the poles on
