Marxism is the ideology, the belief system for Communists. Karl Marx, its principal author, published his seminal work in the middle of the nineteenth century. For Communists, his writings are the equivalent of the Bible for Christians. Marx’s studies led him to conclude that the economic system in every society controls and determines the character of everything: the customs, governments, laws, religions; that economic systems change and advance over time, in accordance with the unalterable laws he had discovered; and that the final stage of economic “advance” must be Communism, which follows capitalism.
